Renewable energy helps keep costs down

Before the upgrade, the Wodonga wastewater treatment plant was North East Water’s largest energy user, using more electricity than all our other treatment plants combined.

The Wodonga Circular Economy Hub now generates renewable energy onsite to power the treatment plant. During the day, its solar farm produces enough electricity to run the plant, with excess energy exported to the grid to offset electricity use at other North East Water sites. In the coming months, captured biogas will provide another source of renewable energy, helping power the plant overnight.

Generating more of our own energy reduces our reliance on electricity from the grid, helping manage rising energy costs and keep customer bills as affordable as possible.
