The Wodonga Circular Economy Hub brings together the city’s upgraded wastewater treatment plant and nearby three-megawatt solar farm. Together, they are changing how Wodonga’s wastewater is treated and creating new opportunities to recover renewable energy from waste.
The $84 million upgrade added a purpose-built facility to treat industrial trade waste separately from household wastewater. It captures biogas for use in treatment and will generate renewable electricity to help power the plant. Upgrades to the existing plant have also increased residential treatment capacity and provides final-stage treatment of industrial wastewater.
Combined with solar power generation and more efficient treatment, the upgrade reduces the plant’s annual operational emissions from 12,000 tonnes to about 1,500 tonnes.
The completed project provides the capacity needed to support Wodonga’s growing population and industry through to 2045, while helping North East Water manage operating costs.
