Project overview

North East Water's $2 million Sisely Avenue Watermain Replacement project in Wangaratta will replace an existing watermain with about 270 metres of new pipe below the North East Rail Line and along Tone Road, the city's major traffic route.

Complex works require trenching, horizontal directional drilling and pipe-jacking under infrastructure including a council road, open space, national rail corridor and VicRoads major road.

An existing watermain will also be diverted to a new alignment away from Sisley Avenue during the project.

The upgrade is expected to be completed by September.

Road Closure Updates

29 August 2025

Recent wet weather has caused a slight delay to our watermain replacement works on Sisely Avenue.

The next stage of the project, which was scheduled to begin early next week, will now start approximately one week later on 8 September.

From Monday 8 September traffic management will change to enable testing and commissioning activities.

  • Sisley Ave will remain open in both directions, but at times will be reduced to a single lane.
  • The left turn lane from Tone Rd to Sisley Ave will be closed during business hours.
  • The left turn lane from Sisley Ave to Tone Rd will be closed during business hours.
  • Heavy vehicle detour between Tone Rd and Sisley Ave will be established via Shanley Street, Reith Rd and Cruse Street.

8 August 2025

Work is continuing as planned. The westbound left-hand lane on Sisley Ave is still closed between Swan Street and Bruck Court; westbound traffic flow will remain open via the single right-hand lane - there is NO full road closure.

This stage of works is set to be completed late August.

Traffic Management Plan for single lane - westbound - closure of Sisely Avenue.

25 July 2025

The westbound left-hand lane on Sisley Ave will close between Swan Street and Bruck Court to enable construction of a new watermain. Westbound traffic flow will remain open via the single right-hand lane - there is NO full road closure.

Weather permitting this work will commence late July for approximately three weeks.

10 July 2025

The Sisley Ave/Tone Road intersection has temporarily reopened.

2 July 2025

Please be advised that traffic conditions will change in mid-July as the Tone Road/Sisely Avenue intersection temporarily reopens. This reopening will allow improved access for a limited time before the intersection closes again in August for final commissioning works.

We understand these changes may cause some inconvenience and appreciate the community’s patience and support as we carry out this essential infrastructure project.
