Project overview

Through our ongoing asset monitoring and reporting program, the 102-year-old Devenish water tower has been deemed a possible safety risk. The tower has now been decommissioned with upgrades to the water network bypassing the tank via a new water pipeline and pump station. An exclusion zone has been established around the water tank with temporary fencing and signage. While there is no imminent danger, we want to ensure public safety and ask that you please avoid the area until the project is completed.

Tower assessment

We have been monitoring the verticality of the Devenish Water Tower since 1997. Results from a recent assessment indicated movement of the tower triggering further investigation. A stability assessment was conducted by Gibson Civil Engineering; a further geotechnical investigation was also undertaken by Albury Wodonga Geotechnical (AWG) to calculate soil bearing capacity and provide a Site Classification.

The results of the assessments stated that with its inherent poor-quality foundations on a P Classification problem site, the tower poses a safety risk and is recommended to be removed.

Next steps

The tower is located on land privately owned by the Devenish Memorial Sports Ground Inc. We are working closely with the committee to ensure the safety of park users. Removal of the tower will occur early in 2027 following internal approvals and a tender process for an appropriate contractor.
